There are many reasons to cancel a cell phone contract. In addition to the special right of termination, you must also observe general formalities. Here you will find an overview of the most important steps for cancelling your cell phone contract. Sometimes you need luck as in a casino for the provider to understand your case.
Do you want to cancel your cell phone contract and are wondering how best to do it? Basically, it’s simple: you write a letter of termination, send it electronically or by post to the provider company and wait for confirmation of termination.
However, cell phone contracts also have their pitfalls. For example, there are minimum terms and deadlines to consider. Here you will find an overview of the most important points and find out how to cancel your cell phone contract successfully.
WHAT TO CONSIDER
To cancel your Handality contract, you must observe deadlines and formalities.
In general: If you want to cancel your cell phone contract, find out the details from your mobile phone provider. To do this, either look in your contract documents or contact the company directly.
The following generally applies to all cell phone contracts:
- The maximum minimum term is limited to 24 months at the beginning.
- Most providers stipulate a notice period of three months before the end of the contract. However, this can vary depending on the contract.
- Once the original contract term has expired, you can terminate your cell phone contract at any time with a notice period of one month.
- If you send the notice of termination by post, allow a little more time. This is because the termination date is not determined by the date of dispatch or postmark, but by the date of receipt by the provider company.
- The personal details and address on your letter of termination must match the details on the contract. If these change during the contract period (e.g. due to relocation or change of name), you must inform the mobile phone provider immediately.
By the way: The Telecommunications Act regulates the legal basis in the fixed and mobile network sector. With the amendment of 2021, automatic renewal of twelve months is no longer possible. Providers must inform their customers of this and obtain their consent. Otherwise, the notice period of one month applies.

If you still want to cancel your cell phone plan, you can follow these steps:
- First, find out when your contract ends. What is the notice period?
- Then find out which forms of termination are accepted by your mobile provider. Check their website, for example.
- Then draw up a formal letter. The consumer advice center provides a template for this.
- In addition to your name, address and cell phone number, the letter should also state the contract number and the termination date (or “at the earliest possible date”).
- Send the letter and wait for confirmation of receipt. If this is not received within a few days, contact the company and follow up.
- It is usually possible to take your old phone number with you. However, you must inform the mobile phone provider so that they can take the necessary steps.
Tip: If you are also changing your phone with your cell phone contract, you can donate your old phone.
SPECIAL RIGHTS
In special cases, you can terminate your cell phone contract early. In addition to the general regulations, there are also exceptional cases in which you can terminate your cell phone contract early:
- The providers have increased the prices. After written notification, you have six weeks to reject the offer, otherwise you automatically agree.
- In some cases, it is possible to pause the contract for a longer stay abroad. Read also: Mobile phone on long-distance trips: 10 tips to ensure everything runs smoothly
- After a move, the provider company can no longer provide the agreed services.
- In extreme cases: the contract partner becomes insolvent or dies.
If there are permanent connection problems or loss of reception, there is usually no way to terminate the cell phone contract prematurely. Nevertheless, it makes sense to get in touch with the mobile phone provider and discuss options and a new agreement.
